FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is day training?

Day training with Train Up That Pup is designed for flexibility. Whether you're at work, working from home, or running errands, our expert trainer comes to your home to train your puppy. You have the option to be present, join in if you wish, or let us handle everything while you focus on your tasks. This service is customizable to fit your schedule. At the end of the week, a mandatory transfer session ensures you're up to speed with your puppy's progress. While many puppies find the training so engaging they nap afterwards, providing you with 2-4 hours of peace, we can't guarantee this for every breed due to their unique energy levels.

How old does my puppy have to be to start training?

We encourage starting training at 8 weeks for the best results, but we accept puppies up to 18 weeks. If you've just brought your puppy home, starting early can prevent future behavior issues, making it a cost-effective choice. For older puppies, we'll tailor our program to meet their needs.

What if my puppy doesn’t have all of his shots?

The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) has not changed their stance on puppy training age, still recommending that socialization and training begin as early as possible, ideally after the first set of vaccines around 7-8 weeks old, even if the puppy isn't fully vaccinated yet; they prioritize early socialization for optimal behavioral development. For detailed guidelines, please refer to the AVSAB link on our website (https://avsab.org/)

What training methods do you use?

We use positive reinforcement and force-free methods, which are not only ethical but also cost-effective in the long run by fostering a loving, cooperative relationship between you and your dog.

What if my dog isn’t a puppy?

While our primary focus is on puppies, we offer tailored training for older dogs as well. Adolescents (6 to 24 months) and adults (2 years and older) can benefit from our Remedial Day Training and Coaching programs. These sessions are priced at $130 per hour, or you can opt for a discount with our multi-week behavior modification programs, which differ from the foundational training we provide for puppies. Starting training at 8 weeks for puppies is ideal; it's not only cost-effective by preventing future behavior issues but also ensures your new puppy learns the right behaviors from the start. For older puppies, we customize our programs to meet their unique needs.

Life Stages of Dogs:

Stage 1: Puppyhood (Birth to 6 months) - This is the critical time for socialization and foundational training. By starting at 8 weeks, you ensure your puppy learns the right behaviors early on, which is more economical than addressing issues later. Early training sets a solid foundation for a lifetime of good behavior.

Stage 2: Adolescence (6 to 24 months) - Adolescence can be challenging as dogs test boundaries. Our remedial programs are designed to manage this phase effectively, offering value by addressing specific behavior issues that group classes might not cover.

Stage 3: Young Adulthood (2 to 4/5 years) - By this stage, with the investment in early training, your dog should be well-mannered, reducing the need for extensive additional training, which aligns with our focus on budget consciousness for the next few years.

Can I observe the training sessions?

Yes, you're welcome to observe or join in if you're home, or you can leave us to it while you work or run errands. However, participation in the weekly transfer session is mandatory to ensure you're fully engaged with your puppy's progress.

How do I know if my puppy is making progress?

We keep you informed with daily Training Session Notes detailing your puppy's activities and progress. Additionally, at the end of each week, we conduct a mandatory Transfer Session where we review progress and questions together, providing you with personalized feedback. This ensures you're always up-to-date on your puppy's development, offering real-time value for your investment.
